I have skill sets as an accountant, higher education teacher, and computer systems and software specialist. For the last 25 years, I have worked on healthcare electronic medical projects, from business planning to implementation. I specialize in working with diverse teams, which include analysts, clinical providers, and executives. In practices where providers struggle with software and billing, I provide necessary assistance through the process including training, workflows, and policy development. I also share strategies on how to ward off Department of Justice audits, and have previously saved a hospital $2 million thanks to the proper procedures being in place.

What is your main motivation for being an advisor?

My skills range from being an accountant to a higher education teacher, and includes implementing computer systems along with Electronic Medical Records software. The crux of my work revolves around sharing knowledge and lessons learned from various medical organizations across the country. I have worked at large medical groups with a diverse staff including social workers, and understand how their roles vary within each state-specific organization. At the beginning of my career, I owned a billing service and implemented office systems to aid the practice in receiving correct payments. I also advised on what the practices needed to be aware of regarding different billing procedures.

This can be beneficial for security, but financially burdensome due to the costs associated with the transition. This paradigm shift presents the challenge of keeping small electronic medical records and patient information safe from hackers.

Tell me about the most impactful project or decision you’ve been involved in as an executive.

The most impactful project I have undertaken involved uniting medical staff, social workers, mental health specialists, along with a mom and baby clinic, and groups focusing on homework and sports activities. As part of a project with the Adolescent Health Clinic in New York City, we collected data on children aged 12 to 17 who were unwilling to share information with their parents due to abuse – some of which was from doctors, nurses, and other staff. We were able to utilize an existing grant for billing, thereby not burdening the parent or parents. A significant challenge included finding a method to deliver information to the state without divulging any names without permission. This is an experience I will never forget.
