What's your main motivation for being an advisor?

My main motivation for being an advisor is to stay engaged in the world and be challenged. I find having a meaningful role keeps me excited and continuing to learn. Advisory roles provide many opportunities to do that!

Do you see any disruptive trends on the horizon in your industry or position?

Without a doubt, AI will be disruptive. However, the bigger concern is the ethics and content of the data that is used to develop the AI algorithms and machine learning that are the basis for those AI tools.

Tell me about the most impactful project or decision you've been involved in as an executive.

When I took over as Director of the National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (NCCIC) in 2015, the organization had been without a full-time leader for two years. Additionally, there were three organizations with differing mission sets that were nominally cohesive under the NCCIC umbrella. They were effectively dysfunctional. We spent four and a half months listening to the workforce. We developed and implemented a reorganization plan with workforce buy-in over the next three months. We also unleashed the creativity of our team by setting simple boundaries for performance - if it wasn't "illegal, immoral, or unethical - go for it!" This effort yielded some significant mission performance improvements and fostered increased retention of highly talented cyber personnel in a hard-to-keep government environment. Over the next two years, mission performance, interaction with federal and private sector stakeholders, and cybersecurity support delivery improved significantly.
